Not every manuscript needs the same thing. A first draft often needs a big-picture developmental edit that looks at structure, pacing and character. A later draft may only need a careful line edit or a final proofread before it goes to print.
We start by reading a sample of your work and telling you honestly which level of editing it needs. No upselling. Then your editor works in tracked changes with clear comments, so you can see every suggestion, accept what you like and push back on what you do not.
Every edit follows New Hart's Rules and British spelling unless you prefer another style (American spelling for a US readership, for example), and we build a style sheet for your book so names, spellings and formatting stay consistent from the first page to the last.

What is the difference between editing and proofreading?
Editing improves the writing itself: structure, flow, clarity and style. Proofreading is the final check for small errors such as typos and punctuation once the text is finished. Most books need both, at different stages.
Will the editor change my voice?
No. Our editors work to make you sound like the best version of yourself. Every change is made in tracked changes, so you decide what stays.
Do you edit in British or American English?
Either. Most of our UK authors choose British spelling and punctuation. If your book is aimed at American readers we can edit to US style instead, and your style sheet records the choice.
How long does an edit take?
A line edit of an 80,000-word novel usually takes 3 to 4 weeks. Proofreading is quicker, often 7 to 10 days. Rush options are available.
How is editing priced?
By word count and the level of edit. You get a fixed quote in pounds before any work begins, so there are no surprises.
